The biggest question a lot of people who haven't been victims of this kind of abuse ask is 'Why didn't you just leave?" This question hurts so many victims because the depth of their Prision's are so hard to explain. I created the onion analogy to help people understand a little better. Each layer of the onion is a different thing keeping the victim trapped in the situation. These layers can consist of Physical Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Gaslighting, Feelings of Shame, Threats against loved ones, Financial Control, Low Self-Worth, Trauma Bonding, Stockholm Syndrome, Lack of Support/Isolation, fear of not being believed/helped. It's important to remember if a victim of this kind of abuse says something believe them, they have already broken free of some of these layers to reach out to you for help. This wasn't what I had planned on talking about especially after putting in 15 hours of work to research and prepare for what I had planned but after a client had a horrible experience with the NYS Police this weekend I knew her story needed to be shared. It was the perfect example of why victims don't report what has happened and this is also the perfect example of why the Police need to be better trained in how to handle victims and assaults.
